Engineering Extravaganza for the Under 9 Crowd

   Minimize

What kid wouldn’t like to build a marshmallow-launching catapult, a confetti-shooting air gun, a hovercraft and a dozen other cool projects? While the kids are hip-deep in science fun, we’ll toss in some mind-bending physics lessons. The kids will never notice they’re getting “what’s good for them;” all those smarts will slide down like carrots in carrot cake!

What’s On the Menu

Every day, we’ll do four to six hands-on projects and experiments. We’ll also discover some weird laws of physics, read some cool books, watch a few short videos and giggle through science jokes.
Day One – Simple Machines
  • Morning
    • Levitate a Brick – Lever Magic
    • How Many Marbles Can You Lift? – Pulleys in Action
    • Color Racing On Inclined Planes
  • Afternoon
    • Who’s Stronger – You or the Can Opener? – A Lesson in Wedges
    • Build an Archimedes Screw Pump
    • Pinwheel Science – Putting Wheels and Axels to Work
Day Two – Compound Machines
  • Morning
    • Show ‘N Tell – Simple Machines
    • Build a Marshmallow-Tossing Catapult
  • Afternoon
    • The Great Crane Design Contest
Day Three – Energy
  • Morning
    • Hopping Exciting! Converting Chemical Energy to Kinetic Energy
    • When You’ve Got Lemons, Make Electricity!
    • Turning Light into Heat
  • Afternoon
    • Bending Light
    • Ice vs. Heat – Who Will Win? – A Lesson in Heat Energy
    • Vibrate Your Way to Fame – An Experiment in Sound Energy
Day Four – Motion
  • Morning
