Engineering Extravaganza for Kids 9 to 11

   Minimize

What kid wouldn’t like to build a marshmallow-launching catapult, a confetti-shooting air gun, a hovercraft and a dozen other cool projects? While the kids are hip-deep in science fun, we’ll slide in some mind-bending physics lessons. The kids will never notice they’re getting “what’s good for them;” all those smarts will just slide down like the carrots in carrot cake!

What's On the Menu?

Every day, we’ll do four to six hands-on projects and experiments. We’ll also discover some weird laws of physics, read some cool books, watch a few short videos and giggle through science jokes.

Day One – Simple & Compound Machines
  • Morning
    • Quick Review of Simple Machines
    • Build an Archimedes Screw Pump
  • Afternoon
    • Build a Marshmallow-Tossing Catapult
    • The Great Crane Design Contest
Day Two – Energy & Forces
  • Morning
    • Hopping Exciting! Converting Chemical Energy to Kinetic Energy
    • When You’ve Got Lemons, Make Electricity!
    • Bending Light
    • Ice vs. Heat – Who Will Win? – A Lesson in Heat Energy
  • Afternoon
    • Vibrate Your Way to Fame – An Experiment in Sound Energy
    • Build Your Own Air Gun (Don’t worry parents – it only shoots confetti!)
Day Three – Motion
  • Morning
    • A Water Race, Demonstrating Newton’s 1st Law of Motion
    • A Weighted Auto Race, Demonstrating Newton’s 2nd Law of Motion
    • A Balloon Race, Demonstrating Newton’s 3rd Law of Motion
  • Afternoon
    • Build A Hovercraft – Another Test of Newton’s 1st Law of Motion
    • Send Your Hovercraft On a Cruise – Putting Newton’s 2nd & 3rd Laws into Motion
Day Four – Putting It All Together
  • An Intro to Goldberg Contraptions
  • Build Your Own Rube Goldberg Contraptions
